You can practically hear the gears whirring, steam whistling and time colliding in Kelley Bell’s animations, which flicker like a Buster Keaton film, meditating on topics from urban gentrification to death, consumerism, and rock and roll. She operates in the most contemporary of media — digital video — but resists being trapped in the present. Not only does Bell freely range through history for inspiration, but she often takes her work to the street, from her much-publicized installation in the clock face of the Bromo Seltzer tower in downtown Baltimore, to guerilla projections that she likens to “video graffiti,” ironic vignettes cast surreptitiously on the sides of buildings slated for demolition from the back of a van at night.

A phenomenal jazz tap showcase with awesome dancing, live music and video celebrating Baltimore as proud home to three of the most talented jazz tap dance percussionists in history: Baby Laurence, Buster Brown and Louis “Hawk” Hawkins.

Hosted by the fabulous Maria Broom (The Wire) with Emmy-Award winning Jason Samuels Smith (Bring in the Funk, Bring in the Noise), dynamic sisters Chloe and Maud Arnold (founders, DC Tap Festival), young tap phenom Luke Nielsen Spring, NYC”s Toes Tiranoff & Megan Haungs, Quynn Johnson and Coppins BRAVO Youth, and DC”s high-energy Capital Taps dance up a storm reprising the steps of the masters, and new work inspired by them.

The East Coasts” premiere tap accompanist Frank Owens is on keys leading his trio, with special guest Michael Raitzyk on guitar, performing music from Baltimore”s storied jazz composers.

Baby Laurence - One of the greatest tap dancers in history and the greatest tap dancer of the modern jazz movement. The king of bee-bop rhythym!

Louis “Hawk” Hawkins - A veteran of tap”s Golden Age and the Apollo stage, Hawk kept tap alive here in the 70s, 80s and 90s mentoring and busking in area bars.

Buster Brown - A superb showman and major figure on the tap scene who toured with everyone from Duke Ellington to Savion Glover.
